Rokita Votes to Advance Workplace Flexibility for Families

Statement

U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, today voted in support of the Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1406) during a legislative markup of the legislation by the committee. The bill allows employers to offer private-sector employees the choice of paid time off or overtime pay for overtime hours worked.

"The Working Families Flexibility Act offers employees choice in overtime compensation arrangements. With increasing demands on many Hoosier families, both in time and finances, this pro-worker bill allows employees to decide what works best for them.

"Private-sector workers and employers should have the same options available as those that exist in the public sector. Like many public-sector workers, this bill provides flexibility so employees can choose paid time off in lieu of overtime pay, giving them additional time spend time with family, care for elderly parents, or attend to other personal matters.

"This bill is a positive step in strengthening American families and I am optimistic my colleagues will support this bill on the House floor," said Rokita.

The Working Families Flexibility Act was referred favorably by the committee with a 23-14 vote.
